Process Capability Analysis

What is process capability?

Process capability analysis is an activity which compares the output of an in-control process to the specification limits by using capability indices.

We are often required to compare the output of a stable process with the process specifications and make a statement about how well the process meets specification.  To do this we compare the natural variability of a stable process with the process specification limits.

A process where almost all the measurements fall inside the specification limits is a capable process.

Why use process Capability tools?

Many high volume manufacturers use process capability analysis to study a defined process for a period of time to understand its true characteristics.

Manufacturers are able to understand process performance and leading indicators to allow for observations to be made to improve processes and maintain stability.

The main factors why businesses perform capability studies are :

  • Confidence in product manufacture – Are my components right ?
  • Reduction of scrap costs – If I can stabilise my process I can save money by elimination waste!
  • Increase output / Right First Time – Make more Good parts per hour!

We can help in-corporate process studies within your facility, if required, or within our own accredited measurement facility to perform measurements on batch components to assist in improving business performance.
